NOT Ex-Library. Reprint of the 1859 play by Irish dramatist Dion Boucicault (1820-1890), taken from a copy in the Fisk University Library Negro Collection. Set in Louisiana, this five-act melodrama addresses themes of race, slavery, and forbidden love through the story of Zoe, an "octoroon" woman - one-eighth Black - whose mixed heritage places her in a precarious position in antebellum society. The work was groundbreaking in its day for portraying a racially mixed heroine with complexity, though it reflects the stereotypes and racial attitudes of its period. Includes the full text of the play, original dramatis personae, costumes list, and staging notes.
