This issue of Cargoes, a periodic publication of the Atlantic Mutual Insurance Company, presents "The Lost State," an account of the short-lived State of Franklin, a frontier territory in what is now eastern Tennessee that existed from 1784 to 1788. Founded by settlers dissatisfied with North Carolina's governance, Franklin elected John Sevier as governor and established a constitution that notably barred lawyers from its legislature and legalized a barter-based currency using animal skins and other goods. The narrative covers its origins in the Watauga settlements, conflicts with Native Americans, failed diplomatic overtures, and ultimate collapse under political pressure and warfare, before being reincorporated into North Carolina. The epilogue notes that Franklin's lands became part of Tennessee upon its admission to the Union in 1796, with Sevier serving as Tennessee's first governor.
