A literary study that brings together eight essays written in 1928 by Hernan Diaz Arrieta - better known by his pen name "Alone" - originally published in the Chilean newspaper La Nacion. These essays analyze Marcel Proust's monumental novel A la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time), which had only recently been completed at the time, with the final volume appearing in Paris in 1927. Alone's analysis, noted for its brilliance, method, and depth, introduced Chilean readers to Proust's work at a time when it was still little known in the Spanish-speaking world.Swinburn's edition presents these essays in full, offering insight into Alone's literary relationship with Proust and his role in shaping Chilean literary criticism. The essays explore themes such as Proust's style, poetry, humor, love, nature, immortality, time, and the feminine temperament. Swinburn also includes reflections written decades later, in 1995, when El Mercurio's Artes y Letras section convened a roundtable with Chilean writers and critics - including Arturo Fontaine Talavera, David Gallagher, Pedro Gandolfo, and Jaime Valdivieso - to discuss Alone's essays and his ability to decipher Proust. En ella participaron el escritor Arturo Fontaine Talavera, el ensayista David Gallagher, el editor de Artes y Letras Pedro Gandolfo y el escritor Jaime Valdivieso. Todos ellos fueron, en algun momento de sus vidas, lectores asiduos de Proust y testimoniaron con sus juicios la vigencia y lucidez de Alone, uno de los criticos literarios mas agudos del Chile del siglo XX.
