Philadelphia Museum of Art, [Philadelphia], 1971. First edition. Softcover exhibition catalog, unpaginated, 30 cm. Bound in blue and cream card wrappers with vertical Chinese calligraphy on front cover and title in English.

Condition & notes

In acceptable condition with some tearing to the covers along top edges and spine that have been reinforce with clean tape. Bumping and creasing to edges and corners of covers and Moderate overall scuffing, aging and soiling to covers. Spine creased but binding is still intact. Previous owner's name in ink on front free end paper and a few hand written corrections in ink to list of artists at the back. Otherwise pages are lightly aged but unmarked. Not Ex-library. Illustrated throughout in black-and-white with photographic reproductions of calligraphic works across several script styles, including seal, clerical, running, and cursive scripts. Catalog published in conjunction with a traveling exhibition organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and curated by Tseng Yu-ho Ecke. The exhibition was on view at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Nelson Gallery - Atkins Museum, Kansas City, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Preface by PMA Director Evan H. Turner; introductory essay on the aesthetics and philosophy of Chinese calligraphy. Major works are drawn from museum and private collections, including the Field Museum of Natural History, the National Central Museum (Taipei), and collectors such as John M. Crawford, Jr. and Wang H.C. Weng.
