In good condition / NO dust jacket. Red cloth covered boards with blind-stamped emblem on front and gold lettering on spine. Light bumping to edge of covers and light overall scuffing and soiling to covers as well. Binding tight. Black remainder mark on bottom edge of text block. Otherwise pages are lightly aged but unmarked. 25 full color plates by G.D. Armour. A humorously illustrated abridgment of Surtees' Handley Cross, focusing on the mock-lectures of the sporting grocer Jorrocks, whose malapropisms and adventures are brought vividly to life through Armour's spirited illustrations. Includes 4 chapters: A Sporting Lector; Another Sporting Lector; The Lector Resumed; Another Sporting Lector. Robert Smith Surtees (1805 - 1864) was an English novelist, sporting writer, and founder of the New Sporting Magazine. Best known for his humorous and satirical depictions of English hunting life, Surtees created the character of Mr. Jorrocks, a Cockney grocer with an eccentric passion for fox hunting, who would become one of the most beloved comic figures in 19th-century English fiction. George Denholm Armour (1864 - 1949) was a prominent British illustrator and painter known for his equestrian and sporting art. A regular contributor to Punch, Armour captured rural and hunting life with both technical precision and humor, making him a fitting visual interpreter of Surtees' work.
