Black, white and yellow illustrated covers have a scuffed patch at the bottom right corner of the front cover where a price sticker was removed taking the think top layer with it. Light bumping and creasing to edges of cover as well and light overall scuffing, aging and soiling. Text block is starting to pull away from the covers along the inside of the front cover but is still attached.. Previous owner's name and date in ink on inside of front cover. [From Introduction] In this little book I have aimed to give a concise introduction to three branches of art: fine lettering, illuminating, and heraldry. Illuminating, the art of decorating the written page with colour and gold, is necessarily practised in conjunction with fine lettering, and often, but not necessarily, joined also with heraldry. On the other hand, of course, fine lettering and heraldry may be practised on their own. A complete guide to all three subjects would obviously have to be a large work of reference, and the information condensed into this small book only covers the major problems, without much detail. The contents are arranged in an inexpensive, handy-sized manual in order to encourage the many now interested in illuminating, and, where possible, to remove obstacles from their progress. Though it is hoped that the book will prove valuable to the beginner or young student, its purpose is also to stimulate general interest in illuminating, and to be of practical service to all who wish to embark on it at any stage. A major impediment to this has always been finding out which materials are needed, where to obtain them, and, finally, how to use them to advantage. This book solves these irritating hindrances, leaving the way clear for the development of technique, and for the craftsman to become the artist.
