[From Foreword] The decade of the 1970s is especially important for this country as, in 1976, the celebration of the two hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence will occur. In our own town, the first year of that decade brings the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary, on May 20, 1970, of the incorporation of Darien as a town separate from its mother town of Stamford. As a suitable and lasting recognition of this anniversary, the Darien Historical Society has prepared this book to be its contribution to the 1970 celebration. No attempt has been made to cover more than the broad outlines and basic facts of Darien history. Part I is an historical summary written especially for this book by the Society's Historian and former President, Mrs. Edward C. McLean. Much of the material on specific subjects, which forms Part II, has appeared from time to time in the Society's Annual. It was felt that to bring these articles together in as nearly chronological order as possible would fulfill a need for those who wish more knowledge of local history, both among school students and interested adults. . .
