In very good condition with light bumping and creasing to edges of covers and light overall scuffing. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. [From Preface] After hearing the late Pipe Major Donald MacLeod introducing the piobaireachd he was about to play, namely, "The Desperate Battle of the Birds", at a memorable recital he gave in Old St Paul's Cathedral at Wellington, N.Z. during 1976, it has been my intention to gather together in one handy reference booklet, all the historical and legendary notes of Ceol Mor available to me. I still remember the huge impact this introduction had, not only on me and other Pipers, but also on the uninitiated including some members of my own family, who all expressed their appreciation of learning the background and what the composer had in mind when composing the tune and thus giving them a better understanding of it while they visualised the circumstances as the music unfolded. This booklet, I feel, could also assist all performers of the "Great Music" in introducing the tune they are about to play, which from the listener's point of view would be most desirable. The notes herein have been gleaned from "Fionn's" notes in David Glen’s Ancient Piobaireachd, Angus MacKay's Collection of Ancient Piobaireachd, The Binneas Is Boreraig Collection, The Piobaireachd Society Collection and Historical Notes by A Haddow, and are indexed similar to the Piobaireachd Society's Collection. In the edition, no attempt has been made to update the style of English expression or grammar, rather out of respect for the work of the original compilers and a sense of piping history and tradition, the quotes are verbatim, except where I have written my own interpretation.
