Catalogue for an exhibition held by Shirley Day Ltd., a London-based gallery and art dealership active during the 1990s, specializing in ancient art from regions along the Silk Road. This catalogue features a curated collection of ancient artifacts from regions east of the Oxus River (modern-day Amu Darya), highlighting the rich cultural exchanges that occurred along the Silk Road. [From Introduction] East of the Oxus: Ancient Art along the Silk Routes is the first of an intended series of exhibitions. It includes sculpture, paintings and works of art which illustrate the intertwining and diffusion of cultures, styles and ideas which took place along the trade routes from India to the Far East and Southeast Asia. The Indian artistic tradition, particularly Buddhist art from the 2nd century onwards, is our main focus. However, we also wish to highlight the influences on Indian art from other cultures, to describe how these influences were assimilated by Indian artists and, in turn, how these complex styles travelled along the silk routes and influenced art styles further east.
