In acceptable condition. Cream paper pamphlet has several small chips and tears and light creasing along edges. Staple bound papers are separating, but all pages are present. Pages lightly browned with age but otherwise unmarked. NOT Ex-library. NO remainder marks. Grinnell describes a ceremony similar to what has been called the Sun Dance. He relates a story told to him by a Pipe Chief who was once part of a branch of the Pawnee family of his initiation into the "Young Dog's Society." In order to get "the secrets of the dance" a candidate would have his breast cut, and strings or sticks passed through the slits, which were tied to posts, and then the dancer would endeavor to break loose by tearing out the skin.
