[From Preface] Humans strive to dominate Earth, and at the same time, they demonstrate little regard for life that is not human. Along with bacteria, viruses, and insects, humans are reaching a status of dominance. But, unlike those forms of life, humans can reason, and the ability to reason should make them aware that their survival depends on other species. Philosophers and naturalists encourage humans to step outside their culture into nature and apply ethics there in the same way ethics are applied among humans (the golden rule). However, ethics toward nature exists only when knowledge and appreciation prevail. It is my intent, through concise, easy-reading essays on interesting subjects, to provide that knowledge and appreciation. [From About Nature's Way] Nature's Way essays are published in several New Mexico newspapers, and they are part of the author's lecture series in the course entitled, "Wildlife Biology," at Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU), Portales. All 80 episodes of Nature's Way were recorded in the KENW-FM studio as scripts under the direction of Duane Ryan, Director of Broadcasting, for national distribution. The author's co-host on the radio shows is Gary Pfaffenberger, who is a Professor of Biology in the Department of Biology at ENMU. The author and Gary Pfaffenberger have published several articles on biology in scientific journals.
