The Kerista Commune was a utopian community founded in 1956 by John Peltz "Bro Jud" Presmont in New York City, later moving to San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district in 1971. The commune sought to experiment with alternative social structures, focusing on communal living and the practice of polyfidelity - a relationship structure where members were fidelitous to multiple partners in a structured rotational sleeping schedule. This aimed to avoid preferential relationships and encourage communal bonds. The commune's philosophy also extended to non-hierarchical decision-making, though internal critiques often highlighted the dominance of Bro Jud over the group's affairs. This led to increasing tensions, particularly concerning leadership and the economic pressures from Abacus' success. In 1991, these conflicts culminated in the group's dissolution after Bro Jud left, and the community formally disbanded shortly after.
