[U]pon familiarizing myself with the collection, I realized that writing an introduction to the arts of the Indian subcontinent, Nepal, and Tibet - the three regions represented in the collection - would not be an easy task. No single collection in any institution is complete enough to cover the entire history of art created in these areas. I have, therefore, organized the book in a manner intended to provide readers, especially those with little familiarity with the arts of the region, with sufficient background information to immerse themselves further in the extensive literature on the subject. To make it easier for the general reader, diacritical marks for Sanskrit words have been avoided in the text and Tibetan names have been spelled phonetically. The index, however, spells all such words in die proper academic mode.
