Maroon textured paper over boards with white lettering on spine. Light bumping and scuffing to edges of covers with a bit of the color scuffed off along the edges. Binding tight. Previous owner's gift inscription (dated 1980) on top corner of title page. Otherwise, pages are lightly aged but clean and unmarked. Dust jacket has a 1" tear on the top back edge near the spine and a few other smaller nicks and tears. Moderate overall scuffing to jacket as well with the color rubbed off along edges and spine. [From Foreword] The Portland Area of Victoria was the site of the first recorded permanent white settlement in the State - whether it was the Henrys or th eMills - but the Mornington Peninsula is to a large extent the cradle of white exploration, settlement and foundation. This leaves aside the still contentious issue of early Portuguese or Spanish landings in the Portland, Port Fairy, Warmambool areas; the fascinating Mahogany Ship story and similar evidence of earlier white visitation and compulsory colonisation by shipwreck. Whatever the true story of the Portland area, it is certain that the Mornington Peninsula was the site of some of the earliest documented white exploration, with Bass, Flinders, Grant, Collins, Murray, Baudin and others all visiting and exploring. The Collins Settlement was a short-term failure but a first. The Peninsula abounds in history and still largely retains important historic and architectural features and landscapes and environmental areas of vast importance. Accordingly, this book is important as it records in sketches and text some of the area's highlights. . . The illustrations and text of the book will give great pleasure and knowledge to many people. It is produced by two people admirably qualified for the task who know and love the area. I believe the book will encourage a widening realisation of the assets of the built and natural environment on the Peninsula. The whole area is a great heritage which, with planning and care, can be conserved for the Nation's benefit during our own and future generations. [About Artist] Joan Bognuda is not only an artist but a visual historian. Joan is from Geelong and after her education at "Morongo" Presbyterian Girls' College, studied the Diploma of Art Course at the Gordon Institute of Technology. . . The fascinating stories which were told to Joan as she painted these old homesteads led her into the depth of her work where not only is a picture painted but Australian Heritage is recorded with sincerity and understanding. Joan, well known on the Peninsula, released a set of prints with 'Mornington Peninsula - Preserving the Past' in 1978 and is also involved with Sovereign Hill Historical Park, Ballarat along with significant private commissions.
