[From Introduction] This booklet was written to accompany the largest and most ambitious exhibition ever presented by the Royal Armouries, Buffalo Bill's Wild West. It tells the story of a quite remarkable man, William F Cody, known to most of us simply as Buffalo Bill. Of all the 'heroes' of the American West Buffalo Bill is the one who epitomises it most. He worked on the wagon trains, he herded cattle, he rode for the Pony Express, he trapped for beaver, he hunted buffalo, he prospected for gold, he hunted down horse thieves and, most importantly of all, he scouted for the army during the Indian wars. All that would have been more than enough for most men, but even while he was still scouting for the army he began a career on the stage which eventually led him to develop what is probably the most successful travelling show the world has ever seen. By so doing Buffalo Bill made the world aware of the American West in a very direct and memorable way. . . There is little doubt that Buffalo Bill wanted his 'show' to be as 'real' as possible. Why else recruit people from the West itself to appear in it? Indeed, to Buffalo Bill it was not a 'sho' at all. To him it was an 'exhibition', a moving, living museum of a fast-passing reality. . . Ironically, though, what Buffalo Bill succeeded in doing in the long term was to ensure the survival of a myth of the American West, a myth about self-reliance and freedom, which is of continuing importance to mankind in an increasingly regulated and constrained world.. .
