[From page 1] The Eighth Session of the California Legislature convened at Sacramento on January 5, 1857, amid official concern over the financial condition of the State and wide-spread rumors of irregularities in the operation of the State's fiscal affairs. Democratic majorities in both houses began an immediate and severe investigation of he conduct of the Treasurer of State and the Controller of State, both electe on the Know Nothing or American Party ticket on September 5, 1855. Management of the State Prison was also thoroughly examined. As a result of these investigations the Assembly impeached Henry Bates, Treasurer, and George W. Whitman, Controller - the only impeachments of executive officers in California. [This paper discusses Whitmans impeachment trial and his subsequent acquittal].
