In very good condition. Glossy pictorial paper covers have light bumping and creasing to edges and corners and light overall scuffing. Binding tight. Light tearing to fore-edge of page 63 where a piece of clear tape had been placed to mark the page. Otherwise pages are clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-Library. NO remainder marks. Color and black and white illustrations throughout. [From foreword] Dwight D. Eisenhower was inaugurated president of the United States on Tuesday, January 20, 1953, and served eight years... As the White House is always a mirror of its times, it was a mirror of the 1950s, but the fifties outran it. Social change and the upsurge of transformation that began in that decade were hardly reflected in the tranquil White House... Everyone liked Ike and everyone wanted to see him. He invited more people to dine at the White House than had ever been there before - state dinners, formal evening affairs, stag dinners, and breakfasts. He approved the guest lists, having his own purposes, and [First Lady Mamie Eisenhower] very emphatically planned the flowers, entertainment, and menus, once gently reprimanding a chef for giving the president a menu to review. The White House was her job. The presidency was his. White House History visits the Eisenhowers this issue showing various angles on their lives at the White House. Eisenhower the painter; Mrs. Eisenhower "making maturity glamorous," a look at the Eisenhower legend after his time in the creation of a memorial room at Blair House, and not least the president's at first cautious, then very certain acceptance of television as a fact of life for the presidency. Our publication in this issue of a previously unknown and recently discovered photograph of President Polk and some of his cabinet members cannot be explained in terms of Eisenhower, only our excitement at White House History about the find.
