The Peterkin Papers is a collection of humorous short stories by Lucretia Peabody Hale, first published in 1880. The stories follow the misadventures of the Peterkin family, a well-intentioned but scatterbrained bunch who always seem to find themselves in trouble. The stories were first published in Godey's Lady's Book in 1880, and they were collected into a book in 1881. The family consists of Mr. and Mrs. Peterkin and their children Elizabeth Eliza, Soloman John, Agamemnon, plus three unnamed little boys. They live in a small town near Boston, and their adventures often involve everyday situations that they manage to complicate with their own unique brand of logic. The are rescued from disaster in each case by the commonsensical "Lady from Philadelphia." Through it all, the Peterkins remain good-natured and optimistic, and they always seem to find a way to get out of their scrapes.
