[From introduction] The Inter-American Development Bank presents this exhibition in honor of the United States of America, host of the 41st Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank. New Orleans: A Creative Odyssey celebrates the rich history and artistic achievements of the people of the City of New Orleans, the site of the Annual Meeting. The exhibition is divided in two sections. The first, "A River and a City" gives an overview of the history of New Orleans. It describes events from the discovery of the Mississippi River by the first Spanish explorers, to the full assimilation of the people into the way of life of the United States. The second section, "A Unique Cultural Blend," highlights cultural expressions that are peculiar to the city itself, including its urbanism and architecture, theater, music, visual arts, and the famous Mardi Gras carnival. The exhibition can be appreciated from several angles, reminding us that creating a city like New Orleans is a historical process. Many of the city's issues and growing pains will seem familiar to people living in cities in Latin America and the Caribbean. . .
