In good condition / NO dust jacket. Grey cloth covered boards with green lettering on front and spine. Covers have a bit of nicking to the cloth at the corner tips and top and bottom of spine and light to moderate overall scuffing, aging and soiling. Binding tight. Pages are lightly aged but otherwise unmarked with occasional light age spotting and with heavier spotting the the title page and end papers. NOT Ex-Library. NO remainder marks. Nice Frontispiece illustration by Charles Livingston Bull. First published in 1915, this heartwarming tale tells the story of Excalibur or "scallywag" to his friends and family, found as a puppy climbing out of a golf course pond with a brick around his neck. Scally grows into a giant, loveable dog and we follow his adventures with the charming young family who found him. This story is all the more amazing considering the author John Hay Beith under the pen name Ian Hay, was serving in the British Army on the Western Front. Many of Ian Hay's novels venerate valor and bravery with tough-as nails heroes, but in this story, the hero is a mutt with a heart of gold. Amidst the bleakest of starts in life, the Scally manages to make his way in the world -- and make some good friends along the way.
