in good condition with only a cut-out remaining of the front of each original dust jacket and a portion of a front flap laid-in. Red cloth covered boards with black initials on front and black lettering on spine. Both volumes have a bit of nicking and fraying to the cloth at the top of each spine. Light overall scuffing and soiling to covers as well. Binding tight. Pages lightly aged but otherwise unmarked. NOT Ex-Library. NO remainder marks. Overall, a nice set. The Essays and Last Essays published over the immortal nom de plum of Elia are contained in one volume, while the other volume holds his "Critical Essays," or writings especially relating to Literature, Art and Drama, and the miscellaneous "Essays and Sketches" which are not part of the Elian books though most often cast in the same delightful mould. Fully illustrated, and with Mr. Macdonald's Notes and a new introduction by Mr. Robert Lynd, this is undoubted the best and cheapest edition of its kind. It is uniform with Carlyle's "French Revolution"
