It is only because of the early efforts of these enthusiastic amateur photographers that we, today, can visualise the town as it was inVictorian times before the urban scene was transformed by the changes and clearances of the 20the century.But many of these old photographs have, with age, become faded or developed blemishes, and are unsuitable for reproduction. This book is an attempt to preserve a representative collection of the old and now-vanished scenes by ‘conversion’ of selected photographs into a uniform series of pen drawings, 130 in all, supplemented by maps of the period and a descriptive and historical narrative.
