[From Foreword] An extraordinary development in American industry today is the meteoric rise in prestige, importance and activity of public relations. In an industrial nation which leads the world in the application of technology to industrial practice, it goes without saying that this newcomer in industry cannot but have important significance to the scientist and to the engineer. For the past several years, there has been held for the benefit of graduate students in the Department of Business and Engineering Administration, a seminar in public relations in which distinguished practitioners in this relatively new field of public relations have collaborated. It is to them that I have turned for the ensuing chapters which view specific areas of public relations in the light of their pertinence to the scientist and the engineer. The series of seminars and the resulting symposium of papers have been made possible through the generosity of Mr. Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., of New York.
