[Excerpt from Foreword] The paintings Gerhard Richter has selected for the exhibition in the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, consist of three groups which despite their external differences, enjoy a meaningful interrelationship. The six 'grey' paintings from the years 1960-1976 are intended only as examples, as points of reference announcing the theme of the exhibition: the reduction to GREY. They are resigned paintings, self-denying as it were, each referring to nothing else but to itself. In sharp contrast are the fifteen 'Baader-Meinhof paintings of 1988-1989. In terms of painting they are similar to the photo-paintings of the sixties; concerning the contents, they differ from them radically. The earlier photo-paintings were mostly based on trivial amateur snapshots, or on photos of stereotyped situations and people in newspapers and advertising brochures; motives which, as Richter says, had little image' and a neutral quality. The Baader-Meinhof series, on the other hand, features a heavily loaded subject that calls not so much on individual as on collective memory. These paintings, for which he made use of press and police photographs, portray a compelling moment in recent German history: the last days of the Baader-Meinhof group. The series bears the title 18 October 1977. the day on which, Andreas Boader, Gudrun Ensslin and Jon-Carl Raspe, ¡n separate cells ¡n the Stammheim Prison, committed suicide simultaneously.
