Otherwise pages are clean and unmarked. [From introduction] This is a study of comparative constructions in the work of Sir Thomas Malory. Specifically, it considers three major sets of comparative constructions --- those with as...as, so...as, and such...as; those with more....than and -er...than; and those with so...that and such... that - in order to provide rules by which the relatively complex sentences containing these elements can be first generated from pairs of simpler sentences and then reduced to produce the forms actually found in Malory's text. The principle aim of this study, then, is to present a grammar of comparative constructions as they occur in Malory. A subsidiary aim is to demonstrate the validity of transformational analysis as an instrument for the historical study of syntax.
