[From Preface] This book has been written primarily to cover the Magnetic and Gyro Compass syllabus for the Ministry of Transport examination for a Master's Certificate of Competency. At the same time those studying for a First Mate's Certificate will find the section on the gyro compass extremely useful. The concise presentation of the subject matter has been made possible by reducing the work to its simplest terms. We have achieved this by omitting any unnecessary mathematics or mathematical concepts. A large number of diagrams illustrate the various points made in the text. The section of worked examples will be found useful in furthering the reader's knowledge of the subject and rapid reference to the substance of each example can be made in the index.
